The landscape along the Saar is characterised by coal mining, but now appears green, with lots of forests and steep incisions in the landscape. Follow the Saar cycle path until the river flows into the Moselle at Konz. From here you’ll cycle through vineyards and wine villages along the Moselle cycle path and you’ll you regularly come across traces of Roman history. Let your mind roam free and enjoy the world-famous Moselle wines and delicious fish dishes. If you love culture, you’ll get your money’s worth in the baroque city of Saarbrücken, the Roman city of Trier and the university city of Koblenz. This tour on the Saar and Moselle cycle paths is also suitable for inexperienced cyclists.
Day 1 Arrival in Saarbrücken
You’ll instantly feel the holiday mood when strolling through the St. Johann market or visiting Saarbrücken Castle.
Day 2 Saarbrücken - Mettlach, approx. 60 km / 37 mi
Follow the Saar through the former coal mining area. The UNESCO World Heritage "Völklinger Hütte" and the fortress town of Saarlouis are well worth a visit, while the Saar loop near Mettlach is an impressive natural spectacle.
Day 3 Mettlach - Trier, approx. 50 km / 31 mi
Visit the Old Tower before getting on your bike. You’ll cycle through the picturesque Saarburg to reach the Moselle, where Trier awaits you with countless Roman buildings such as the Porta Nigra, the amphitheatre and the Roman bridge.
Day 4 Trier - Piesport, approx. 50 km / 31 mi
Follow the bends of the Moselle through vineyards and villages. Neumagen-Drohn is the oldest wine town in Germany
Day 5 Piesport - Traben-Trarbach, approx. 40 km / 25 mi
Try the famous Bernkastler Doctor Riesling and stroll through the historic town centre of Bernkastel-Kues with its many colourful half-timbered houses.
Day 6 Traben-Trarbach - Cochem, approx. 55 km / 34 mi
Today, you’ll once again cycle below famous vineyards. The half-timbered houses in Enkirch, Beilstein and Metternich Castle are worth seeing. Cochem with the Imperial Castle and the Enderttor Gate, perfectly rounds off the day.
Day 7 Cochem - Koblenz, approx. 50 km / 31 mi
Take the chairlift to the Pinnerkreuz and take in the magnificent view before cycling to the university town of Koblenz. The Old Castle, the Electoral Palace and the cultural centre Forum Confluentes with the Mittelrhein Museum await you. The Ehrenbreitstein Fortress offers a great view of the city and the Deutsches Eck (German Corner), a headland where the Moselle joind the Rhine.
Day 8 Departure or extension
