The starting point of your daily bike tours is the Roman city of Trier. The landscape is varied: the Moselle Cycle Path takes you through picturesque vineyards and wine villages, the Saar Cycle Route mostly uses former towpaths along steep riverbanks, while the Kyll Valley Cycle Route runs along railway tracks through the Eifel mountain range. Enjoy the regional wines and beers as well as a diverse range of fish dishes before returning to your cosy hotel in the evening. This cycling holiday based in Trier is also suitable for inexperienced cyclists.
Day 1 Arrival in Trier
The Roman monuments of Augusta Treverorum are a UNESCO World Heritage Site: Porta Nigra, amphitheatre and the Roman bridge, across which cars are still allowed to drive.
Day 2 Excursion to Perl, approx. 50 km/31 mi
The train takes you to the border triangle (Dreiländereck) where three countries meet. The open-air museum Roman Villa Borg is worth seeing. Follow the border between Germany and Luxembourg through vineyards back to Trier.
Day 3 Excursion to Saarburg, approx. 50 km/31 mi
You’ll cycle along the Saar into the picturesque Saarburg. It is home to a castle ruin, the Amüseum, which hosts an interesting craft exhibition and a waterfall. You’ll have a splendid view of the town and the river landscape from the hilltop castle. You’ll return to your starting point via Tawern.
Day 4 Excursion to Piesport, 50 km/31 mi + boat trip
You’ll take a boat to Piesport. Follow the bends of the Moselle through vineyards and villages. Neumagen-Drohn is the oldest wine town in Germany.
Day 5 Trier
Spend the day exploring Trier, which looks back on 2000 years of history. The Barbara and Imperials baths, Church of Our Dear Lady (Liebfrauenkirche), the Basilica of Constantine and Trier Cathedral await you. Make sure to try the Trier Flieten, a specialty chicken wing with a secret spice mixture.
Day 6 Excursion to Bitburg, approx. 50 km/31 mi
You’ll take the train to the pottery town of Speicher, from here it is only a short distance to Bitburg in the southern Eifel. How about a cold beer from the famous Bitburg brewery founded in 1817, before you hop back onto the saddle and follow the Kyll back to the Moselle.
